“What an incredible artistic journey this farming grandmother from
Australia has had since joining Alyona on her online course. I 'laid to
rest' my graphite pencils from the '70s to embark on a new adventure in
colour with her and..... Wow.... what a ride it has been !!

"I am loving this art experience with Alyona Nickelsen. For the last four years I’ve been able to devote more time to drawing and studying design concepts. Last Spring I bought a few Prismacolor pencils, a colored pencil book and started trying my hand with this medium. Then I bought another book and another. I began to look for someone who was teaching drawing/painting with colored pencils but didn’t have any luck in my area. Linda Foster, my drawing teacher at the time, showed me an article in the Art Calendar by Alyona Nickelsen describing her online courses. It included two of her paintings. I emailed her that afternoon and bought her book as soon as it came out. I just finished Course 1 and eagerly look forward to the next one. Alyona’s course is very well organized and includes lecture and demonstration DVDs for each week, individual assignments based on the lecture materials and quality art supplies. The weekly online meetings make the experience very personal. I looked forward to interacting with Alyona and the other students, asking questions and discussing the week’s assignments. Equally important were the detailed critiques and comments Alyona sent after she received each weekly project. I learned so much during this one-month course with Alyona who is dynamic, demanding and very supportive. My materials have just arrived for the challenging Course 2. I can’t wait to get started." "I
was first introduced to Colored Pencil about 5 years ago in a Botanical
Drawing class. I was hooked. I've been involved in
Decorative Painting for almost 30 years, working in various mediums.
I felt I'd finally found my niche so to speak.

“Painting and drawing has always been my favorite past-time. I graduated
from the Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine
Arts. For the last three years I have been working mainly in
Colored Pencil portraits. Even though I thought I already had a
pretty good understanding of how to work with colored pencil, but
Alyona’s class has taught me a lot. I learned many new techniques that I
know will enhance my future work. I highly recommend this course
to anyone interested in improving their skills with colored pencil.”

"I took my first colored pencil course from a local artist about 6 years ago, and fell in love with the medium. I bought almost every book on the subject - I have well over 20 volumes on colored pencil. However, because I have carpal tunnel in both wrists, I found that I couldn't work too long before I had to put the pencils down. Well, I put them down four years ago, and then picked them up about 2 years ago, hoping that my wrists had healed. No such luck, but I love colored pencil! Imagine when I saw one of Alyona's artworks on the web - I googled her site, tried out the demos, and was hooked. When the courses came up I immediately signed up for the first one. After 3 classes I went back on the web and signed up for the second and third courses at once, and I haven't looked back. The techniques I have learned, the wonderful instructional DVDs and notes, and the hard (but extremely necessary) exercises have had the effect of jumping my skills up two levels in such a short time, I am amazed at the results. ( An added bonus -there absolutely no strain on my wrists ! ) The weekend webinars are cool, and we all have great fun - this is the perfect way to learn. I can't wait for the next course!"

"I'm an Aussie who lives in the mountains three hours inland from the
Gold Coast.
I am surrounded by the bush, red cattle, border collie dogs and spotted
horses. Living on the land is my life!
Art-wise.... I drew in graphite at school in the '70s, then life got in
the way as it does and I didn't pick up a pencil again for 32 years,
that was my first colored pencil drawing.
A year later I stumbled across Alyona's art on the web and I was awe
struck! So enrolling in her school has been a dream come true.
The knowledge Alyona has shared with us in CP 1 has been immense.
The exercises revealed many methods I had not experienced before and
helped my confidence and flexibility behind a pencil.
I feel so privileged by her generosity and helpfulness. My skills and
awareness as a future realistic pencil artist have increased ten fold. Thank you special lady!"

”I took my first drawing class (beginning drawing) last February 2008, then Charcoal, and basic colored pencil drawing. That was my introduction into the art world. I found your advertisement on one of the colored pencil web sites. I was trying to find a class that I felt would give me a chance to improve my skills. I had been trying the step-by-step methods but was not learning what I needed. Your method was revolutionary and totally different from any other sites that I had visited. So I decided to give it a try. My impression: You do not give step-by-step instructions (great). What you do provide is all the tools necessary to accomplish the weekly projects. That includes exercises, techniques, explanations on the how and why and demonstrations. Now, of course, the student must do his or her part. That is to faithfully do all the exercises, and then listen and observe the instructions on the CD as many times as needed to fully understand the subject matter. Then, using what you have learned do the weekly project. I do admit that it is a lot of work to do in a week but I think hard work is the key to learning. “ Vern Ball |
